MILITARY WORKING DOG TEAMS SUPPORT PROJECT (Code Name: Support Our 4 Legged Soldiers) My mission is a basic one. To support and supply some of the most important soldiers that are defending our freedom as they protect their handlers and our soldiers with their lives. The Military Working Dogs (MWD’s) I have always been a strong advocate for animals and have volunteered in many capacities both locally and out of the area but felt the need to further my support to those dogs who are true HEROS, the MWD’s. Through gathering information from other military and support web sites and contacting MWD Teams personally I found that the dogs are in need of many items that are not available to them thru military channels. One support site even calls the dogs “The Forgotten Soldiers”. According to the site the dogs only receive the basic necessities, food and water, which means their comfort is secondary to their job. I felt this to be, as so many others do, but mostly their handlers and partners, totally unacceptable. I have read that when handlers are asked what their needs are they mostly ask for things for their dogs. Items like treats, ear wash, eye wash, creams for the dogs paws and nose, dog sunscreen, dog Mutt Lucks mitts (protection from the burning sand and frozen ground), doggles (for protection from the glairing sun and sandstorms), cooling vests and blankets (to help keep the dogs cool as they do their job), pull rope toys and kongs (the dogs have to unwind after a mission also), flea and tick meds, Kevlar ballistic vests, the list goes on and on. The handlers very rarely ask for anything for themselves. There was even the request for dog blankets since it gets cold in both Afghanistan and Iraq. It’s not uncommon for a handler to pull his dog into his sleeping bag with him to keep the dog warm. The MWD Teams are totally AMAZING ! For all that they have given up for us, it is they who say how grateful they are for our support.
